Surfers Paradise Looking Fine For Summer
ASP has created and installed the 1184 concrete panels that help beautify and protect the Gold Coast’s most popular foreshore in a project which has employed 20 men working six days a week to ensure that the Surfers Paradise Foreshore is ready for the warmer weather.
“It’s been quite a logistical feat,” says ASP general manager Patrick Buckley. “The panels were constructed at our plant at Burleigh and trucked to the site before being jetted into place with seawater.
“We had to make sure that all of the panels were at the right place at the right time, work in conjunction with other contractors to eliminate delays.”
The major project also utilised ASP’s world leading technology including the deep well dewatering .
“We saw 10 years ago that environmental considerations were going to be playing an increasingly important part in construction and development, so we went back to the beginning and looked at how we could best pump and treat site water,” said Patrick.
“In the case of the Surfers Paradise Foreshore Redevelopment, we were able to send down a spear and use ocean water to jet in the panels. The spear was also able to be used by other contractors. That meant less disruption on site and we didn’t have to bring truck loads of potable water on site through heavy traffic.”
On average, each of the panels used in the Surfers Paradise Foreshore Redevelopment weighed four tonnes and took between five to 10 minutes to jet into place. Each panel had to be placed precisely for the wall to maintain its structural integrity against the worst nature can throw at it.
“Using these systems enables us to install revetment and secant walls in areas that need protection from the scouring effects of tides and other severe weather,” said Patrick.
